Direct rail link a game-changer for Kashmir’s economy: KCCI on inauguration of railway bridge by Modi

Modi inaugurated world’s highest railway bridge over Chenab River in JK on June 6, 2025.

Srinagar The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has welcomed the inauguration of the direct rail link between Katra and Srinagar, calling it a “historic and transformative” development that promises to reshape the economic landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement, the Chamber said the new rail link, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on June 6, would greatly improve regional connectivity and offer a safe, reliable, and all-weather mode of transport that the region has long needed. It said the direct rail corridor would ease the movement of people and goods while reducing over-dependence on the often-disrupted Srinagar-Jammu highway.

The KCCI praised the efforts of the government of India in completing the ambitious project and said the link would serve as a catalyst for economic growth, particularly in sectors such as tourism, trade, and logistics.

Highlighting the anticipated benefits, the Chamber noted that the rail link would reduce travel time, operational costs, and logistical challenges for local businesses. It expressed hope that the next step would be the introduction of direct train services from Srinagar to Jammu and Delhi without intermediate halts, which would further enhance connectivity for both passengers and businesses.

The Chamber also strongly advocated for the launch of cargo train services, arguing that freight connectivity is essential to unlocking Kashmir’s full economic potential. It said that the region’s key export sectors — horticulture, handicrafts, and local manufacturing — stand to gain significantly from faster and more cost-effective access to major markets across the country.Kashmir history tour

According to the Chamber, efficient freight services will help reduce post-harvest losses, boost artisans’ incomes, and improve profit margins for small and medium enterprises. The import of essential raw materials will also become easier, contributing to better supply chain management and reduced production delays.
