Heavy rains trigger flood alert in JK, CM directs departments to stay vigilant
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday directed all departments concerned to remain on high alert after heavy rains led to waterlogging in several residential areas across Jammu and Kashmir, with rivers and nallahs flowing above the danger mark.
According to officials, control rooms have been activated and the CM’s Office is in constant touch with line departments to monitor the situation.
Priority has been accorded to drainage works in the worst-hit localities along with restoration of essential services, including water supply and electricity.
Authorities have also appealed to people in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain cautious and follow advisories issued from time to time.
In various areas of Samba, authorities have sounded a flood alert after heavy rainfall led to a sharp rise in the water level of the Basantar Nallah on Sunday morning.
At 8am, the water level in Basantar Nallah touched 6 feet, breaching the evacuation mark. The prescribed alert level for the stream is 4 feet, while the danger level is set at 4.5 feet and the evacuation level at 6 feet.
Given the situation, people living in low-lying areas and near riverbanks have been cautioned against venturing close to the water. The administration has urged residents to remain alert and follow safety advisories in order to avoid any untoward incidents.
Continuous rainfall in the region has added to the concern, and the district authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
Relief and rescue teams have been kept on standby in case the water level rises further.
