Omar reviews flood situation in Jammu, heads to region amid rising concerns
Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday reviewed the flood situation in Jammu through an online meeting with senior officials, directing the administration to remain on high alert as incessant rains triggered concerns across the region.
According to officials, the meeting focused on the rising water levels in major rivers and streams and the precautionary measures being taken to safeguard vulnerable areas. Omar stressed the need for timely coordination between departments and asked district authorities to stay in close touch with local communities.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister described the situation in many parts of Jammu province as “quite serious” and announced that he would take the next available flight from Srinagar to personally monitor developments on the ground.
He also said that additional funds have been placed at the disposal of deputy commissioners to cover emergency restoration work and other exigencies.
Authorities said round-the-clock monitoring of water bodies is underway and advisories will be updated regularly for the public. As a precautionary measure, the Tawi Bridge at Bikram Chowk has been closed for traffic, with diversions routed through Bhagwati Nagar and Bahu Fort–Gujjar Nagar bridges.
People in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been urged to remain cautious as the administration keeps flood control infrastructure and evacuation plans ready.
