44 from JK detained in Assam after locals raise suspicion about their identity
Tinsukia: Forty-four people claiming to be from Jammu and Kashmir were detained at New Tinsukia Railway Station in Assam on Monday after local youths raised suspicion about their identity, police told PTI.
The group had arrived on the Chandigarh Express and was intercepted by residents, who then informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Hijuguri police outpost. Officers reached the spot soon after to inquire into the matter.
Officials said the detainees told police they had travelled from Jammu and Kashmir at the invitation of a contractor, though none of them could provide the contractor’s name. During questioning, several members said it was their first visit to Tinsukia and that they had come for labour work involving tower installation, earth digging, and another project extending into Arunachal Pradesh. One of them also mentioned plans to go to Dibrugarh.
Police said they are verifying the identities of the persons and the purpose of their travel.
