New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said the Constitution serves as India’s guide for discarding a colonial mindset and embracing a more nationalistic outlook.
Speaking at the Constitution Day ceremony in the Central Hall of the Old Parliament building, now known as Samvidhan Sadan, Murmu said India is offering the world a new model of development.
“Our Constitution-makers ensured that our personal and democratic rights would always be protected. The Constitution is the guiding document that helps us shed colonial thinking and adopt national thinking,” she said.
Murmu highlighted the country’s progress in lifting 25 crore people out of poverty, calling it a major national achievement. She added that women, youth, farmers, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, the middle class and the emerging new middle class are strengthening India’s democratic framework.
The President also released a digital version of the Constitution in nine languages — Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Bodo, Kashmiri, Telugu, Odia and Assamese. The event included a collective reading of the Preamble led by her.
