Srinagar: The Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) on Wednesday rejected claims that it had issued directions to extend special treatment to certain individuals, saying the controversy stems from “misinterpretation” and “sensationalised reporting.”

In a statement, SKIMS said all patients are treated equally and that any streamlining or triage is based solely on medical urgency, not recommendations from any office.

SKIMS recently inaugurated a Medical Social Welfare Cell with dedicated staff and nodal officers to better manage patient flow and support those in need. The institute said the order at the centre of the debate was issued only to ensure that deserving patients who approach the Raj Bhavan, the chief minister’s office or other authorities can smoothly access welfare schemes such as AB-PMJAY, RAN and the Chief Minister’s Cancer Treatment programme.

“Where does the question of VIP treatment arise?” the statement said.

The institute added that much of the current public discourse appears to be driven by misinterpretation. It said SKIMS remains committed to equitable care, ethical practice and transparency, and urged people to rely on factual information.

“Responsible discourse is essential to maintaining trust in healthcare institutions,” the statement said, adding that SKIMS will continue to strengthen systems that benefit all patients “without fear or favour.”
