Iran has strongly criticised US President Donald Trump after he shared a video in which India and China were described as “hellholes,” sparking diplomatic reactions from both Tehran and New Delhi.
In statements posted on social media, Iranian diplomatic missions in India defended the two countries as ancient civilisations and rejected the characterisation. The Iranian Consulate in Hyderabad said India and China represent the “cradles of civilisation,” while taking a swipe at US leadership in its response.
The controversy stems from a video featuring conservative commentator Michael Savage, who criticised US birthright citizenship laws and referred to several countries, including India and China, in derogatory terms. The clip was circulated online through accounts amplifying Trump’s activity.
India responded sharply, with the Ministry of External Affairs describing the remarks as “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste.” Officials emphasised that such statements do not reflect the strong and evolving relationship between India and the United States, which is based on mutual respect and shared strategic interests.
The US later issued a clarification stating that Trump views India positively and maintains good relations with its leadership, in an apparent attempt to defuse the situation.
The episode highlights sensitivities surrounding immigration debates in the US and their global diplomatic implications. It also underscores how political rhetoric, particularly when amplified on social media, can trigger international reactions and strain bilateral ties.
