Vijay-led Govt wins trust vote in Tamil Nadu assembly with 144 votes in favour

Tamil Nadu CM Vijay.
Chennai: Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s government won the trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday with 144 members voting in favour, 22 against and five abstaining.

Those who voted in favour of the confidence motion included AIADMK rebels.

The trust vote began after Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar ordered the closure of all doors in the House and directed members to remain in their seats during the voting process.

Replying to the debate on the confidence motion, Vijay said his government would be “secular”.

“This government will function with the speed of a horse and not indulge in horse trading,” he said.

He also assured the House that all welfare schemes introduced by previous governments would be continued.

Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, speaking against the motion, argued that the ruling party did not have the required majority on its own.

“You do not have the 118 seats required for a majority,” he said.

He also criticised the Chief Minister for contesting in two constituencies and accused the government of relying on support from parties that had contested as part of the DMK-led alliance.

“Instead of governance through Instagram ‘Reel’, do some ‘Real’ governance,” Stalin said.

He further questioned Vijay’s meeting with AIADMK rebels and asked whether what was taking place was “change” or “exchange”.

After completing his speech, Udhayanidhi Stalin announced that DMK members would walk out of the Assembly during the trust vote.

The DMK members subsequently staged a walkout before the voting took place.
