Woman allegedly gang-raped inside sleeper bus in Delhi; driver, conductor arrested
New Delhi: A 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by the driver and conductor of a sleeper bus in northwest Delhi, police sources said on Thursday.
The incident took place on the night of May 11, and both accused have been arrested.
Based on the woman’s complaint, police registered a case at Rani Bagh police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to rape, gang rape and common intention.
According to police sources, the woman was returning home after work when she approached a bus parked near the B-Block bus stand in Saraswati Vihar and asked one of the men for the time. She alleged that he dragged her into the vehicle, where she was raped by both men.
The bus has been seized and further investigation is underway.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram Singh said claims that the bus was driven around the city during the assault were incorrect.
“The call was made by one of the accused himself and as senior officials reached the spot, there was no question of them running away,” Singh said, adding that the woman’s medical examination was conducted immediately before an FIR was registered.
The opposition Aam Aadmi Party condemned the incident, with Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj comparing it to the 2012 Nirbhaya case and calling it a “big shame.”
