US President Donald Trump said he invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit the White House in September after the two leaders held high-stakes talks in Beijing focused on Iran, trade and Taiwan.

Trump said he and Xi agreed that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open to international shipping, international media reported.

“We’ve settled a lot of different problems that other people wouldn’t have been able to solve,” Trump quoted as saying after the summit.

The White House said the leaders discussed keeping the strategic waterway open to ensure the free flow of global energy supplies.

Xi, in his opening remarks, said China and the United States should be “partners and not rivals” and called the bilateral relationship the world’s most important.

At the same time, Chinese state media reported that Xi warned Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to “clashes and even conflicts” and place the entire relationship in jeopardy.

Trump praised Xi as “a great leader” and said the two countries would have a “fantastic future together.”

The summit, the first visit to China by a U.S. president in nearly a decade, also addressed trade tensions, artificial intelligence and export controls.

Trump was accompanied by a delegation of senior executives, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

The White House said the two sides discussed expanding Chinese purchases of U.S. agricultural products and oil, as well as efforts to curb the flow of chemicals used to manufacture fentanyl.

Trump is seeking Chinese cooperation on Iran while also aiming to secure economic deals that could strengthen his domestic standing ahead of US midterm elections later this year.
