Reasi: Authorities on Tuesday opened multiple spillway gates of the Salal Hydroelectric Power Station on the Chenab River in Reasi district following a significant increase in water inflow caused by continued rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
Officials said the controlled release of excess water is being carried out to regulate the reservoir level and ensure the safe operation of the dam.
The discharge has led to a substantial rise in the water level and flow of the Chenab River downstream.
Authorities have advised people living along the riverbanks and those engaged in activities near the Chenab to exercise extreme caution and avoid venturing close to the river until water levels recede.
The situation is being closely monitored by the concerned departments, and further releases will be regulated depending on the inflow into the reservoir. [KNT]
