Leh: Two moderate earthquakes struck the Union Territory of Ladakh within nearly four hours on Thursday, causing concern among residents.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the first and stronger earthquake, measuring 5.5 magnitude, occurred at 6:05 am. Its epicentre was located in Leh at latitude 36.88°N and longitude 74.402°E, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
A second earthquake, measuring 4.3 magnitude, was recorded at 9:54 am. The tremor occurred at latitude 36.76°N and longitude 75.326°E, also at a depth of 10 kilometres in the Leh region, the NCS said.
Both earthquakes were recorded in the Leh area within a gap of around four hours. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.
The successive tremors caused concern among residents in Ladakh, which lies in a seismically active region.
