Six civilians were killed and four others, including a 14-year-old child, were injured after shelling struck the village of Koloskovo in Russia’s Belgorod region, acting regional governor Alexander Shuvaev said Monday.

Shuvaev said the victims were killed in what was described as Ukrainian shelling of the village in the Valuysky district, near the Ukrainian border. Independent verification of the incident was not immediately available.

“Unfortunately, six civilians were killed as a result of Ukrainian shelling,” Shuvaev said, offering condolences to the victims’ families and friends.

Four people were injured, including a 14-year-old child. Two of the wounded received medical treatment but declined hospitalisation, while the other two, including the child, were taken to Valuysky Central District Hospital, where doctors were treating them, Shuvaev said.

A building was burned, and a car was damaged at the site of the strike, according to the governor.

Koloskovo is about 15 kilometres (10 miles) from Ukraine’s northeastern border, according to reports. The attack came amid intensified Russian and Ukrainian strikes on areas far from the front line.

Russia and Ukraine have regularly accused each other of attacks causing civilian casualties during the war, now in its fifth year.
