Israeli naval fire reported near Khan Younis amid Gaza ceasefire
Israeli military vessels have reportedly fired at areas close to the coast of the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis, according to Quds News Network on Tuesday amid continued tensions over an internationally backed ceasefire.
Palestinian media reports claimed that Israeli naval vessels had fired weapons in waters close to Khan Younis with no immediate report of casualties or damage from either side. Details of the incident cannot currently be independently confirmed. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on this reported naval fire.
Amid continued violence in the territory despite a ceasefire that prevented large-scale conflict from breaking out in October. Israeli military operations have been carried out in parts of the enclave and Palestinian officials have accused Israel of breaching the ceasefire repeatedly.
Recent reports have shown Israeli strikes and gunfire taking place both inside and surrounding Khan Younis, killing and wounding Palestinians as they go about their daily lives. While Israel says that some of these operations were aimed at targeting Hamas militants or responding to perceived threats, such actions still pose dangers for non-combatants in the region.
Even more recently, Palestinian media outlets report that Israeli naval ships opened fire on fishing boats off the coast of Gaza City this past weekend, leaving three fishermen injured.
But the latest report couldn’t be independently confirmed immediately. It wasn’t clear either what had prompted the Israelis’ naval fire.
