Uncertainty over Tarique Rahman’s India visit

Bangladesh lawmakers have elected veteran Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the country’s 23rd President, marking the first contested presidential election in 35 years.

The 78-year-old secured 255 votes, defeating retired army Colonel Oli Ahmed, who received 88 votes.

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin announced Alamgir’s victory after the parliamentary vote.

Of the 349 eligible lawmakers, 343 cast their ballots, with all votes declared valid. Alamgir is scheduled to take the oath of office at Bangabhaban’s Darbar Hall on Friday evening.

Meanwhile, uncertainty continues over Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India from August 23 to 25.

His press secretary said on Friday that Dhaka had not yet taken a final decision and was awaiting India’s response regarding the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other wanted individuals.

Rahman’s proposed trip has been closely linked to the ongoing dispute over Hasina, who fled to India after the 2024 student-led uprising that ended her government.

Bangladesh has repeatedly sought her extradition, while India has said it is examining the request.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs also declined to provide an update on Rahman’s possible visit.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said there was nothing to announce at present and that any developments would be shared later.

The uncertainty comes as Bangladesh and India attempt to manage strained relations following Hasina’s removal from power.

Dhaka has reportedly sought a more favourable diplomatic environment before Rahman makes his first official visit to New Delhi.
