Authorities at the Algerian civil protection services said on Thursday that of 193 wildfire blazes, firefighters had succeeded in suppressing 147 as they struggle against dozens of remaining fires with intervention troops across the nation, according to Algeria’s state television, Télévision Algérienne
Wildfires have spread through several other provinces but the country’s worst-hit zones have been identified as regions lying both in northern and northeastern Algeria where weather conditions are both hot and arid, increasing the fire risks. Details regarding magnitude and devastation were not publicly available so far.
Current fires follow a strenuous wildland fire season for the North African country after weeks of constant heat and prolonged drought that triggered hundreds of wildfires and vegetation blazes. Civil protection teams are actively working across burnt locations to curb the fires and secure inhabitants in those areas.
