Iraqi security forces cordoned off an area in southern Baghdad on Thursday, beginning a manhunt for people involved in a shooting which killed two security personnel after security forces embarked on a drive against unauthorised construction of homes, Officials said. One person was arrested, Rudaw TV reported.
The shooting incident took place during a drive against unauthorised construction in Dora district, undertaken by security forces and municipal teams working together in the area to remove illegal construction work. A police brigadier and other security personnel were killed, and four other officials were injured during the shooting incident.
Security forces, headed by Baghdad Operation Command, sealed all access roads in the area from all directions and launched further investigation into the incident in search of others believed to have been involved. The search is on for the attackers as one suspect was arrested, Rudaw TV reported.
The operations on removing unauthorised constructions or any structure in Dora district were initiated as instructed. According to authorities the municipal force carried out the operation as the officials directed them to remove all unauthorised construction works in the Dora area.
Hussein al-Awadi, Senior Deputy Interior Minister of Iraq, directed the formation of a joint security and intelligence force to discover the attackers, take action against them and send them to trial.
