Bristy Mukherjee, 28-year-old niece of Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was found dead at her family residence in Birbhum district on Tuesday, officials said.
Mukherjee, daughter of Nihar Mukherjee, said to be Banerjee’s maternal cousin and a former TMC leader, was found at the residence located in Kusumba village of the Rampurhat area.
Her body was retrieved from the house and sent to a hospital for post-mortem, they said, adding that an investigation has been initiated into the circumstances leading to her death.
Sources indicated that the death could be a suicide, but nothing has been confirmed, as official sources said a post-mortem examination would determine the exact cause of death.
Some reports claimed the woman was undergoing treatment for depression and that there was an ongoing divorce case, while the authorities are yet to ascertain the exact reasons and motive.
