President Donald Trump has promised to pay every adult US citizen $5,000 if Republicans maintain control of both houses of Congress in November’s midterm elections, the Guardian reported.
At a lengthy address at the Republican Party’s first midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, Trump promised the proposed payment, which he described as a dividend from government revenue.
“If the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000,” Trump told the audience.
The proposal, which would likely cost more than $1 trillion, would require congressional approval and has raised questions about how it would be paid for. Later, Vice President JD Vance said wealthy Americans might be excluded, and tariff revenue could help pay for the payments.
In his speech, Trump did not give any details of the programme. The proposal comes as Republicans try to hold onto their control of Congress in the Nov. 3 elections.
In addition, Trump urged voters to “pretend that I’m on the ballot” and to view the election as a referendum on his presidency. He attacked Democrats as “radical” and warned of economic and security consequences if Republicans lose.
The almost two-hour speech also focused heavily on Trump’s record, the economy and the war with Iran.
