Iraqi authorities have announced the closure of several border crossings for “administrative and security” reasons but said the Zurbatiya and Manzariya crossings will remain open to travellers.
Authorities didn’t immediately say how many crossings were closed or how long the moves would be in effect. The announcement comes amid heightened security concerns in the region and increased scrutiny of Iraq’s border crossings.
Zurbatiya, in Wasit province, is a major crossing between Iraq and Iran used by both travellers and commercial traffic. Al-Mundhiriya, or Manzariya, is another Iraq-Iran crossing in Diyala province.
Iraqi officials say travellers could still use the two remaining open crossings.
The closures could impede passenger and trade movement along Iraq’s borders, although the immediate impact on commercial traffic was not clear.
In the past, Iraq has imposed border restrictions on a temporary basis in times of heightened security. In November 2024, Iraqi authorities announced the closure of the country’s borders due to regional security concerns and officials said security forces were awaiting further directives.
