India said Thursday it will take “all necessary measures” to protect its trade and economic interests after the US House of Representatives approves a bill to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of the Russian oil and gas, the Reuters reported.
The Ministry of External Affairs said India was watching developments following passage of the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The bill, which was passed by the House 262-159 on Wednesday after passing the Senate in August, is now awaiting the signature of President Donald Trump.
“As stated on several earlier occasions, India remains firmly committed to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion people,” the ministry said. India would continue to source energy from diversified suppliers based on evolving market conditions, it said.
India had raised concerns with US, the MEA said. officials in recent months, including the possible effects of the legislation on bilateral relations and international energy markets.
“The Indian side has also made clear its determination to take all necessary measures to protect its trade and economic interests,” it said, adding that the Indian government would collaborate with Indian trade and industry bodies to address trade implications.
The bill authorises US president authority to slap tariffs as high as 100% on major consumers of the Russian energy, including India and China.
