Schools and markets in several hill districts have been closed for about a week, disrupting supplies and daily life, violence between the Kuki and Naga communities in Manipur has killed six people in four days, including four women.
The latest killings have added to tensions in the northeastern state where residents in affected areas have complained of shortages of essential goods. Sugar prices have also increased to ₹400-450 per kilogram in some places, Dainik Bhaskar reported.
Six deaths since Sept. 13 included two women shot dead at Leisang in Tamenglong district on Tuesday, The Sangai Express reported.
Residents also report difficulties travelling, due to security restrictions and blockades which impede access to markets and medical services. Some villagers were staying indoors fearing more violence.
The recent clashes are between Kuki and Naga communities and are distinct from the wider Meitei-Kuki conflict that erupted in May 2023. Local reports say about 40 people have been killed in Kuki-Naga violence since February.
Amid a tense situation in several districts, Kuki organisations have blamed Naga armed groups for recent attacks, reported The Sangai Express.
