President Donald Trump has extended a restriction requiring a $100,000 payment for certain H-1B visa applications for another year. The measure is in place while legal challenges work their way through US courts.
The White House said Friday the restriction, first imposed in September 2025, will remain until Sep. 21, 2027. Subject to certain exceptions, it primarily applies to H-1B workers outside the United States who are seeking entry under newly approved petitions.
The H-1B programme enables US employers to hire skilled foreign workers, especially in technology and other specialised sectors. Visas are particularly important to firms that hire workers from India and China, Reuters reported.
The administration has argued that the measure is needed to fight what it calls abuses of the programme and the use of lower-paid foreign workers. Business groups and companies say the H-1B visas help employers attract highly skilled professionals and fill shortages.
The $100,000 requirement has been challenged in court. Reuters reported that a federal judge ruled in June that the higher fee was illegal and blocked the government from collecting it and an appeals court is reviewing that decision.
