President Donald Trump is preparing an elaborate White House welcome for Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, with the first visit by a Chinese leader to the United States in more than a decade to include a military ceremony, flyover and state dinner, BBC reported.
In an unusual protocol move for a US president, Trump will be welcoming Xi in person at the Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday. On Thursday, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will host Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at a state arrival ceremony involving 479 military personnel, according to the White House.
Military displays and a flyover of a B-2 bomber and four F-22 fighter jets will be part of the ceremony before Trump and Xi speak. Thursday night is a state dinner.
Trade, tariffs, rare earth minerals and artificial intelligence are likely to be among the discussion topics. The visit comes as Washington and Beijing are trying to manage tensions over trade, Taiwan and technology.
