The White House announced Friday that the United States and China will set up a bilateral channel for communication on artificial intelligence incidents, establishing a mechanism for the two countries to talk about potentially serious AI-related issues.
The agreement comes after a summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, in which the two leaders talked about the growing risks and rewards of advanced AI. The White House said the countries also agreed to form a “US-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue” to discuss AI risks and benefits.
The next high-level exchange was expected by November, the White House said.
The new channel follows discussions earlier this week between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. Bessent had said Washington proposed a “notification mechanism” for AI incidents that could impact national security.
“We want a shared vision of common goals and common threats,” Bessent told The Associated Press after the talks. He said more transparency between the world’s two leading AI powers was important.
The initiative comes as Washington and Beijing compete for technological leadership and deal with concerns about risks from AI systems that are becoming increasingly capable.
