Eyewitnesses said that the couple had stepped outside after water levels suddenly rose behind their house. According to the husband, water gushed in with great force from behind, causing his car, bearing registration number JK11 1546, to shake. When he attempted to move the vehicle to a safer location, the rushing water submerged it before he could get inside.
His wife followed him to call him back and help him, but she was caught in the strong current. Both were swept away by the floodwaters. While the man managed to cling to the side and save himself, his wife was carried downstream and remains missing.
Locals said heavy rainfall since early morning created a cloudburst-like situation, triggering a sudden surge in the local nallah.
Following the incident, residents launched a search operation using ropes to look for the missing woman in the muddy stream. Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams also reached the spot and began rescue efforts.
The search and rescue operation was underway till the last reports came in. (GNS)
