Piyush Goyal: India, US near finalising bilateral trade deal, talks in final stage

Narendra Modi and Donald Trump.
New Delhi: India and the United States have completed most of the discussions on their proposed bilateral trade agreement and are now working on finalising its details, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said.

Speaking at the India-Netherlands Business Forum in The Hague, Goyal said negotiations had made considerable progress, with both sides now fine-tuning the proposed agreement ahead of its finalisation.

“We have concluded most of the discussions on the India-US trade deal. Now we are fine-tuning the agreement,” the minister said.

Goyal also revealed that India is engaged in trade negotiations with eight other countries as part of its broader strategy to strengthen international economic partnerships, expand market access and create fresh opportunities for Indian businesses.

His remarks follow encouraging signals from Washington regarding the proposed deal. US President Donald Trump recently told reporters at the White House that India and the United States were “pretty close” to reaching an agreement.

Trump indicated that the two countries were working towards a deal, adding that it would differ from agreements concluded previously.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has also expressed confidence in the negotiations, saying that major issues had been addressed and that the two sides were nearing an agreement.

Goyal has repeatedly stressed that the final arrangement must ensure Indian exporters remain competitive against businesses from other countries.

India-Netherlands economic ties

During his visit to the Netherlands, Goyal met members of the Dutch Parliament to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen economic cooperation between the two countries.

In a post on X, the minister said discussions focused on the potential of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to improve market access, diversify supply chains and open up new investment opportunities.

He also underlined the importance of collaboration in advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and innovation, describing these sectors as important to building a resilient and future-ready economic partnership between India and the Netherlands.

Push to expand trade and industrial cooperation

Goyal is visiting Germany and the Netherlands from October 22 to 27 as part of India’s efforts to strengthen strategic economic partnerships, boost bilateral trade and promote cooperation in industry and technology.

During his visit to Berlin from October 22 to 24, the minister attended the Berlin Global Dialogue, where he interacted with international policymakers and business leaders.

He highlighted India’s macroeconomic stability, growing manufacturing capabilities and role in strengthening global supply chains.

The visit forms part of India’s wider efforts to diversify trade relationships, attract investment and strengthen its position in international markets.
