Samsung expands into Sonwar as Srinagar’s retail map shifts

The newly opened Samsung outlet in Srinagar

The new outlet brings premium smartphones and consumer electronics closer to residents, tourists and visitors from south Kashmir, while highlighting the growing competition in the high-end smartphone market.

Sonwar Bagh, long known for its residential neighbourhoods, is developing a new commercial identity.

The latest addition is a Samsung Smart Café, bringing the South Korean electronics brand closer to customers who once had to visit the city’s traditional shopping hubs to explore its products.

Located along the main highway near the Four Points by Sheraton Srinagar hotel, the outlet has opened under the Abaden Corporation.

It stocks Samsung’s latest smartphones, tablets, wearables and other consumer electronics, while providing customers with assistance in selecting and purchasing devices.

The expansion highlights a gradual shift in Srinagar’s retail landscape, with major consumer brands looking beyond established commercial centres.

Sonwar’s location also makes the outlet accessible to tourists and visitors from south Kashmir who travel through the area.

For Samsung, the new store comes at a time of growing competition in the premium smartphone segment, particularly against Apple’s iPhone.

The owner, who requested anonymity, said Samsung had strengthened its position through improvements in camera technology, display quality, battery performance, security and water resistance.

He pointed particularly to Samsung Knox, the company’s security platform, which he said offered protection comparable to Apple’s security features.

“Samsung has better features compared with Apple’s iPhone. When we talk about security, Samsung Knox is at par with the iPhone,” he said.

He added that improvements in the company’s devices had helped Samsung compete directly with Apple in several areas, giving customers more choices in the premium segment.

The store plans to build its business around helping customers understand those choices before spending money. Its staff will explain device specifications and guide buyers towards products that suit their requirements, the owner said.

A customer interested in photography, for instance, may prioritise camera quality, while someone who plays mobile games may look for processing power and display performance.

Battery life could be the main consideration for another buyer, while business users and people who watch videos may have different preferences.

Such differences, the owner said, often go unnoticed when customers purchase devices without understanding their specifications.

Physical stores retain an advantage in this respect. Customers can handle a phone, test its camera, compare screen quality and examine its design before making a purchase. Online platforms provide convenience and a wide selection, while a showroom allows buyers to experience a device directly.

The new outlet intends to make that experience a central part of its retail service.

Financing has also become an important part of the business model.

The store provides installment-based payment options that allow customers to spread the cost of expensive smartphones and other electronic devices over a period of time.

Such arrangements can make premium products more accessible to buyers who prefer to avoid paying the full amount upfront. The available plans depend on the device and the customer’s eligibility, the owner said.

The new outlet marks a shift in how brands are reaching customers in Srinagar, moving beyond established shopping centres into residential neighbourhoods.

For buyers, it brings more choices closer to home, along with the chance to compare products and make better-informed decisions.
