Israeli tanks advanced further into Jabaliya in the northern Gaza Strip on Monday, reportedly firing tank shells into the center of the city’s refugee camp and conducting airstrikes that destroyed clusters of houses, The Guardian reported.
According to Reuters, the tanks were attempting to reach the heart of the camp, the largest of Gaza’s eight historic refugee camps. Israeli forces also allegedly compelled hundreds of Palestinians sheltered there to evacuate.
Al Jazeera Arabic reported that Israeli forces were targeting ambulances attempting to reach the injured, while airstrikes hit densely populated residential areas within the refugee camp, specifically block 2 and block 4.
The Israeli military had issued evacuation orders to Jabaliya camp residents on Saturday, citing efforts to eliminate Hamas forces from the area.
One resident, Saed, aged 45, told Reuters, “They were bombing everywhere, including near schools where people displaced from their homes are staying. War is resuming; this is what it looks like in Jabaliya.”
