Jammu: An engineering student from Bihar, enrolled at the Central University of Jammu (CUJ), has been arrested for allegedly running an illegal arms racket, police officials said.
The student, identified as Kaif Ahmed, was apprehended by Miran Sahib police following investigations into a firing incident that occurred outside a hotel during a function on February 23.
According to police, Kaif, who was pursuing a BTech degree at CUJ, admitted during interrogation that he had supplied at least 11 firearms to gangsters in Jammu. He reportedly sourced weapons from Bihar and sold them locally for up to Rs1 lakh each.
“A major arms supply network has been busted with his arrest,” a senior officer said, adding that Kaif was taken into custody on July 12.
The initial firing case led to the arrest of two gangsters, Rajat Raina and Raghunandan Kesar, who were found with two pistols. Their associate, Balwinder Singh alias Goru Jatt of Vijaypur in Samba, was apprehended after a six-month manhunt with a pistol and live cartridges.
Another buyer, Manik from Suchani, who allegedly procured a firearm from Kaif, remains absconding.
Kaif is accused of smuggling pistols and country-made weapons (kattas) from Bihar and distributing them among local criminals. A case under Section 3/25 of the Arms Act has been registered at Vijaypur police station, and further investigation is underway.
