Srinagar: The higher reaches of Kashmir experienced the season’s first snowfall on Friday, with the Meteorological Department forecasting more in the coming days.
Fresh snowfall was reported from Affarwat in Gulmarg’s ski resort in Baramulla district and Sinthan Top in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said. Light showers were also recorded in several plains, including Srinagar and its adjoining areas.
According to the MeT office, a fresh western disturbance is likely to impact Jammu and Kashmir and nearby regions from Sunday.
“Under its influence, widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall in the higher reaches are expected in J&K from October 5 to 7, with the main activity likely between the night of the 5th and the morning of the 7th,” the advisory stated.
Moderate to heavy snowfall is forecast over the upper reaches of Anantnag-Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg-Zojila, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Gulmarg and Kupwara-Sadhna Pass. The department has also predicted light snowfall in middle reaches and moderate to heavy rain across the plains of Kashmir during the period.
