Ukraine’s capital Kyiv came under a drone attack early Tuesday after a three-day US-brokered ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine expired, Ukrainian authorities said.

“Enemy UAVs are currently over Kyiv. Please stay safe until the alert is cleared,” Tymur Tkachenko said in a post on Telegram.

Air raid sirens sounded in the capital for the first confirmed time since Friday, before the ceasefire took effect. The Kyiv regional military administration urged residents to remain in shelters and said air defence systems could be operating in the area.

The truce, which ran from May 9 to May 11, was announced by US President Donald Trump ahead of Russia’s Victory Day commemorations. Trump had expressed hope that the pause in fighting would mark “the beginning of the end” of the more than four-year war.

Throughout the ceasefire, both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of violating the agreement through attacks on civilian and military targets.

The latest drone assault suggests that hostilities have resumed in full despite diplomatic efforts to create momentum for broader peace negotiations.
