PDP’s Iltija Mufti raises concern over garbage dumping site near Eidgah in Bijbehara

Bijbehara: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Tuesday expressed concern over a garbage dumping site allegedly created near Eidgah in Hatigam area of Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

In a post on X, Mufti said tonnes of garbage had been dumped near the Eidgah, posing a health risk to residents and threatening the local environment. She alleged that a portion of the waste was entering a freshwater stream flowing below the site.

Calling attention to the environmental implications, Mufti questioned the establishment of dumping sites across Kashmir without adequate consideration for public health and ecological concerns.

“Why can’t we live in harmony with Kashmir’s fragile ecology?” she wrote, while tagging officials and agencies, including the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies Kashmir, the Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, the District Information and Public Relations Office Anantnag, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and the Central Pollution Control Board.

The PDP leader urged the concerned authorities to take note of the issue and address the environmental and public health concerns arising from the dumping site. There was no immediate response from the authorities on the matter.
