Iran narrowly missed a place in the Round of 32 after a series of late twists, ending a resilient World Cup campaign played amid political and logistical challenges

Iran’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to an emotional end after the team missed out on a place in the Round of 32 despite remaining unbeaten in the group stage and overcoming significant off-field challenges.

The Asian side entered the tournament amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, where all of its group matches were scheduled to be played. Political uncertainty, visa issues and travel restrictions complicated the team’s preparations and logistics throughout the competition.

Iran opened its campaign with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in Los Angeles, but was reportedly required to return immediately to its base in Tijuana, Mexico, instead of staying overnight. Team captain Mehdi Taremi criticised the decision, saying it affected the squad’s recovery. Visa restrictions also limited the presence of team officials and support staff, while repeated cross-border travel added to the players’ workload.

On the field, Iran stayed in contention until the final round of group matches. A 1-1 draw against Egypt left the team dependent on other results after a stoppage-time goal by Shojae Khalilzadeh was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Iran’s qualification hopes then rested on the outcome of Algeria’s match against Austria. Algeria briefly held a result that would have sent Iran through, but Austria scored a late equaliser to deny Iran a place in the knockout stage.

Despite the heartbreaking finish, Iran’s unbeaten group-stage run and ability to remain competitive under difficult circumstances made its World Cup campaign one of the tournament’s most memorable stories.
