The United States is preparing for a major new round of sanctions targeting Iran, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent calling it an “economic D-Day” in his opinion pieces published in Financial Times. Iran warned it could retaliate to hinder oil exports should tensions increase.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced in the Financial Times opinion piece, the Treasury Department’s plans to launch what he declared to be “the biggest financial offensive ever mobilised” against Iran. U.S officials say this includes action to hit any entities and countries that are still engaged with Iran and to inform financial institutions and other nations of the dangers associated with offering Iran a lifeline again.
“We have made every effort to ensure entities that are doing business in Iran are aware,” Secretary Bessent wrote, but did not immediately say more about sanctions
In its reply, Iran dismissed the warnings and told the White House that American sanctions were a sign of desperation and likely would fail. “We reject the statements of U.S officials, with confidence,” said the Foreign Ministry.
If the U.S. keeps up the pressure, Iran says it has the ability to disrupt oil exports throughout the surrounding region of the Persian Gulf.
