Israeli forces launched a manhunt after an Israeli man was stabbed and seriously wounded near the Palestinian village of Al-Auja in the Jordan Valley of the West Bank, and roadblocks were set up as the attacker fled the scene, Israeli military and medical officials said.

The attack took place on a highway used by Israelis and Palestinians about 8km north of Jericho. The victim, a 24-year-old Israeli man, was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Centre in Jerusalem for treatment. His condition was initially listed as moderate by medical officials.

The Israeli military said it sent special forces and aircraft to search for the attacker, while security forces blocked roads and entrances.

“The forces are interrogating suspects and conducting intelligence-gathering work to locate the terrorist,” The military said during the search.

Footage that seemed to show the attacker leaving the scene after stabbing the victim repeatedly was cited by Israeli media.

Israeli forces later arrested a 16-year-old Palestinian suspect in Al-Auja after a hours-long manhunt, the military said. The suspect was moved to the Shin Bet security agency for interrogation. The stabbing comes amid a surge of violence and military operations in the occupied West Bank.
