Srinagar: A heated exchange took place in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Tuesday after MLA Mehraj Malik was stopped by Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather from asking a supplementary question concerning the amnesty granted on electricity bills.
Rather asked Malik to return to his seat and declined to allow him to raise the supplementary query. Objecting to the Speaker’s decision, Malik said in the House, “Assembly is not anybody’s jageer.”
The disruption continued for some time, prompting the Speaker to warn Malik to maintain decorum or face action.
Later, Rather informed the House that a committee had already ruled that supplementary questions could be asked only by members who had originally submitted the main question.
Commenting on the incident, Rather said Malik’s conduct had not been appropriate and maintained that he had exercised restraint during the exchange.
