India’s Mirabai Chanu bagged a silver in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, on Wednesday, her first medal at the continental Games, the Hindu reported.
Chanu snatched 87kg and clean and jerked 111kg for a total of 198kg to settle for second. North Korea’s Ri Song-gum took gold with 215kg, setting world records in the snatch, clean and jerk and total. Bronze went to Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana from Indonesia.
Chanu’s Asian Games wait was finally over with silver. She placed ninth at the 2014 Games and fourth in Hangzhou in 2023, after missing the 2018 edition due to injury.
Chanu, an Olympic silver medalist and a three-time Commonwealth Games champion, also helped India return to the Asian Games weightlifting podium for the first time since Karnam Malleswari’s silver in 1998.
