Chinese President Xi Jinping wants to make a recent thaw with US President Donald Trump on trade and Taiwan more enduring after the two leaders held talks in Washington this week, Moneycontrol reported.
Xi urged Trump to oppose the independence of Taiwan as the two sides moved closer to extending a limited trade truce. Trump and Xi also agreed to meet again in November, shortly after the mid-term elections in the US.
Trump described the relationship as having “never gotten along better”, while Xi called the leaders’ meeting schedule this year “unprecedented”.
Washington’s policy on Taiwan had not changed, US Ambassador to China David Perdue said. “We don’t support independence,” Perdue told Fox News, adding: “But we really don’t support coercion either.”
Despite signs of easing trade tensions, the two countries remain divided on Taiwan, advanced technology and export controls. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the latest trade arrangement would provide limited tariff relief, with further details to be announced.
