Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “very good ideas” aimed at finding a mutually acceptable solution to the Ukraine conflict and repeatedly raises the issue in their meetings.
Speaking at the 23rd annual Valdai International Discussion Club meeting, Putin said Modi had maintained a strong interest in ending the war despite the close relations between India and Russia.
“He has very good ideas aimed at finding mutually acceptable solutions,” Putin said, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.
Putin said Modi brings up the Ukraine conflict at “every meeting” and described the Indian prime minister’s position as neutral while maintaining an interest in ending the fighting.
Modi has consistently called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the war and has maintained contact with both Moscow and Kyiv. His government has also offered to support efforts towards a negotiated settlement.
Putin’s remarks came as Russia and Ukraine remain engaged in the conflict more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
India has maintained close diplomatic and economic ties with Russia while also calling for an end to the conflict through peaceful means.
