Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has praised the Indian diaspora in Germany, saying Indians are known for peaceful conduct and do not indulge in vandalism, drawing a contrast with protests in parts of Europe.
“That’s why our Indian brothers and sisters are welcomed in their host countries. “As long as they abide by the law of the land and take care of their families, they are always welcome,” Goyal said to the Indian community in Berlin, as reported by India Today.
Goyal said, “They know you don’t do vandalism. They know you don’t do all those street gundagardi types to the society as we are seeing in other parts of Europe.”
He said the Indian community was “peace-loving” and that reputation overseas was a key indicator of how well it was held in high regard by the country that played host.
His comments came as protests in France and Italy over issues ranging from the cost of living to public services and wages unfolded. Several protests turned violent or saw acts of vandalism despite many remaining largely peaceful.
Goyal also called on established members of the Indian diaspora community to help Indian students coming to Germany, especially those from less-affluent families.
During the minister’s visit, he met with German officials and business leaders to discuss cooperation in trade, investment, manufacturing and emerging technologies.
The comments pointed out the importance of overseas Indians in facilitating people-to-people contact, and international ties and economic relations for India.
