51 killed, over 9000 injured during 2016: Mehbooba in Assembly

Jammu: Mehbooba Mufti, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday informed that 51 people were killed and over 9000 were injured during the 2016 uprising after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Wani.

Mehbooba, in a written reply to a National Conference legislator added that out of the 9000 injured, 6000 got injured due to pellets.

She informed that 51 people were killed in Kashmir from July 8, 2016 to February 27,2017.

She said 9,042 people were injured in firing of bullets, pellets, pava-shells and others during the period. Of these, 6,221 were injured due to pellets, 368 due to bullets, four due to pava shells and 2,449 suffered other injuries, she said.

Mehbooba also revealed that as many as 728 suffered eye injuries due to pellets out of which 510 were hospitalized. She added in her reply that 5,197 pellet victims were treated at district hospitals and the rest were referred to specialized treatment.

The Chief Minister also pointed out that the highest number of deaths took place in district Anantnag followed by Kulgam where 13 deaths took place. Pulwama recorded 7 deaths and 5 people were killed in Kulgam district.
