Suspected militants open fire on army casspir in Anantnag

Srinagar: Suspected militants launched an attack on the Indian army personnel in Anantnag on Sunday.

A police official posted in the area said that an army casspir was stationed in Bijbehara area of the district.

“Some bullets were fired upon the casspir,” he said.

The incident took place in Goriwan area of Bijbehara.

“The casper was part of an army patrol party,” he added. There was no report of any casualty.

“The situation is under control,” he claimed.

Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts are observing a complete shutdown today against the killing of civilians and three militants.

However, reports reaching here said that the the casper was part of an army convoy when militants opened fire on it.

The militants fled the spot unhurt.

Two civilians, including a 14-year-old student Ehsan Mushtaq, were shot dead by the Indian armed forces in Arwani area of Kulgam district on Friday when hundreds of people tried to disrupt a cordon and search operation (CASO) jointly launched by Ist RR of Indian army, 90th battalion of para-military CRPF and J&K Police.

Three militants, including top commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba Junaid Mattoo, were killed in the encounter.

Kashmir observed a complete shutdown on Saturday as well while several other areas of Kashmir are shut in protest against the killings.

On last Thursday, a civilian was killed in Rangreth area by personnel of SSB. He was identified as Naseer Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Ashtangoo Bandipora.

Later that day, a cop of J&K police was killed when unknown gunmen attacked a police patrol in Hyderpora are of Srinagar.

The deceased cop was identified as Shahzad Dilawar Sofi. He was a neighbour of slain Naseer.
