Army major allegedly shot dead by subordinate after he confiscated his cellphone

Srinagar: An Army major on Monday was shot dead late at night allegedly by a subordinate soldier after a dispute at a post near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Army Major was shot dead by his subordinate, who used his AK-47 rifle, after his phone was confiscated by the officer during a surprise check at a post in Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, a media report said today.

According to the police, Major Shikhar Thapa of 8 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), posted at Buchar post in Uri sector, was allegedly shot when he reprimanded Naik Kathiresan G for using his mobile phone on duty in a ‘sensitive area’.

When the phone was snatched from him, the soldier allegedly shot Major Thapa five times, killing him instantly.

Major Thapa belonged to the 71 Armoured Regiment but was attached to 8 Rashtriya Rifles, the army’s elite counter-insurgency unit posted in Uri.

According to a report in NDTV, “the major scolded the soldier after he was found using his mobile phone on duty.”

The soldier became angry after his phone got damaged while it was being confiscated. “An argument ensued between the officer and the soldier who then fired two bullets at Thapa from behind,” said the report.

The defense PRO Mr Rajesh Kalia couldn’t be contacted for comment.
