Shopian encounter: Three militants, two army men killed, a dozen civilians injured in clashes

Two civilians sustain bullet injuries, one suffers pellet injuries in the eyes

Srinagar: Three militants, all locals, have been killed in the encounter in Awneera area of Shopian district on Sunday.

Around a dozen civilian have been injured in clashes which erupted after the encounter. Among them, two have sustained bullet injuries and one suffered pellet injuries in the eyes. All three have been reffered to SMHS Srinagar for advanced treatment.

One of them who suffered bullet injuries has been identified as Sareer Ahmed Bhat of Shermal.

The three slain militants have been identified as  Umar Majid Sheikh, resident of Kathpora Yaripora; Adil Malik, resident of Malikgund Shopian and Irfan ul Sheikh, resident of Malldaira Shopian.

All of them were affiliated with the Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit. A police official said that three AK-47 rifles were recovered from their possession.

Searches are going on in the area and the locals have alleged that forces ransacked their houses and damaged property.

Earlier two army men were killed during the encounter. They were identified as Gawai Sumedh Waman and Ilayaraja P. Their mortal remains were flown back to their native places after Army paid tributes in a ceremony at BB Cantt.
