Tarun Tejpal rape case trial to begin on September 28, says Goa Court

Tarun Tejpal, the former founder-editor of Tehelka, faces 10 years to life imprisonment if found guilty

Mapusa, Goa: A sessions court in Goa’s Mapusa is scheduled to resume hearing in connection with a case of rape against former Tehelka Magazine editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal.

The additional sessions court will pronounce an order on framing charges against Tejpal. The trial will open on September 28.

Tejpal, accompanied by his family, let out a small laugh when the court decided on the date.

The sessions court had sometime back accepted Tejpal’s request, made under CrPC Section 327(2), to hold the rape proceedings against him on-camera.

Journalist Tarun Tejpal is accused of sexually assaulting a female colleague inside a lift at Hotel Grand Hyatt in Goa on the night of November 7, 2013 and stands to be charged with nine charges  five of which are rape.

Initially, the 54-year-old Tejpal was booked under 354-A (sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment), 376 (rape), 376(2)(k) IPC (rape of a woman by a person being in position of control or dominance over the woman) by crime branch. The probe later added sections 341 and 342 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 376 (2) (f) (person in position of trust or authority over women, committing rape of such women) and 376C IPC (sexual intercourse by person in authority) and Section 354 IPC reports Indian Express.
