New York: Rafael Nadal defeated South African world number 32 Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in a completely one-sided US Open final. Nadal did not even face a single break point and gave away very few unforced errors.
World number one Nadal won his third US Open and his 16th grand slam title, increasing his chances of overhauling Federer’s record of 19 major championships.
The Spaniard has a 23-14 win-loss record against Federer and has won six of their nine finals at a major.
It was Rafael Nadal’s fifth title of the year and 74th of his career. The $3.7 million winner’s prize boosted his career earnings to a level just under $90 million.
Rafael Nadal also went on to describe the year 2017 as “one of the best of his career”.
