Cops appreciate locals after they hand over six youth suspected of being braid choppers

Srinagar: Locals of Lar area in Ganderbal handed over six people to the police after they were roaming suspiciously in the area last night.

People, suspecting them of being braid choppers handed them over to the police, without harming them.

Police appreciated the locals for not taking the law and order into their own hands.

SHO Lar told a local daily Greater Kashmir that six suspected braid-choppers were caught by people in Lar while roaming suspiciously in Repora village late Friday night.

“The good thing is that the people without taking law and order into their own hands called the police immediately and handed them over,” he said.

However on enquiring, it came to fore that they had come to meet there a girl and were not braid choppers.

The SSP of Ganderbal, Fayaz Ahmed also appreciated people for cooperating and handing the suspects to the police and asked the people to behave in the same manner in such situations.

Around 120 odd braid chopping incidents have taken place in the valley. So far police has not been able to catch any one responsible. A special investigation team has been constituted to probe the incidents however, they have not been able to reach any conclusion too.

Due to the inability of the authorities to nab criminals, youth have started to man the streets and act as vigilantes.

However in many cases, innocent people have been thrashed on suspicion of being braid choppers.

Recently, a mentally challenged person was thrashed by a group of people as he was accused of being a braid chopper. According to the police, the ‘mob’ tried to set him ablaze.
