Shutdown call: Malik arrested, shifted to Central Jail

Srinagar: Mohammad Yasin Malik, the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front was arrested on Monday and shifted to the Central Jail of Srinagar.

A party spokesman said that Malik was arrested in order to prevent him from leading a protest in solidarity with the political prisoners lodged in various jails of the state.

He added that a police party arrived at his Maisuma residence in Srinagar today morning and detained him.

The Joint Resistance Leadership on Sunday had called for a complete shutdown against the ill treatment of political prisoners lodged in various jails in and outside the state.

In wake of the call authorities have imposed strict restrictions in the city to prevent protests. Heavy deployment of forces was seen in the Downtown area of Srinagar.

Mirwaiz Umar Forooq was placed under house arrest on Sunday in wake of the strike call.

Rail services connecting north and south Kashmir were also suspended as a precautionary measure.
