China holds trilateral meeting to mediate Af-Pak conflict, Afghanistan to be part of CPEC

China, which on Tuesday hosted the first ever trilateral foreign ministers meet with Afghanistan and Pakistan, said it had discussed extending China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan, a move that should concern India.

Following talks in Beijing with Afghan Foreign Minister Rabbani and Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, Chinese FM Wang Yi told reporters that Afghanistan has urgent need to develop and improve people’s lives and hopes it can join inter-connectivity initiatives.

China positions itself as a ‘helpful party’ in talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan have soured in recent years as Kabul blames Islamabad of supporting and funding Taliban, who are responsible for repeated attacks in Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s main objective, Kabul says, is to limit the influence of India in Afghanistan.

Pakistan denies this and instead, claims innocence in attacks carried out by terrorists who cross the Pak-Afghan border.
